Hartford, WI – At 5:41 P.M. on 09/18/2024, Hartford Fire & Rescue responded to Teri Lane for the report of a detached garage on fire. Upon arrival, the first arriving unit found heavy black smoke pushing from the open overhead garage door of a 30’x50’ detached garage, and the homeowner inside with a garden hose. The first arriving command vehicle deployed a Fire Suppression Tool (FST) to start extinguishing the fire and made sure that the occupant evacuated the building. Hartford Fire & Rescue firefighters arrived shortly after and made entry to extinguish the remaining fire. Vehicles were rapidly removed to prevent further damage to them. Interior crews located the fire on the mezzanine of the garage and quickly extinguished it utilizing approximately 50 gallons of water. Overhaul was conducted to ensure that the fire had not spread to the concealed attic space of the garage, and that no smoldering fire remained in the items stored on the mezzanine. EMS crews provided rehabilitation efforts to the firefighters. The incident was controlled by over 20 Hartford Fire and Rescue staff with two fire engines, one ladder, two tenders, two ambulances, and one command vehicle. No citizens or fire rescue personnel were injured in this incident.
The building’s structural integrity was not affected, but smoke spread included the entire building with heat damage to the upper level and ceiling of the garage. Fans were used to complete ventilation of the garage with fresh air. Two fire investigators from Hartford Fire & Rescue along with two detectives from Washington County Sheriff’s Office conducted an origin and cause fire investigation. At the time of this release the cause is undetermined pending further electrical system analysis. The property was turned back over to the homeowners.
