Why It matters

Buy, Charge, & Recycle Smart

Lithium-ion batteries power nearly everything we use: phones and laptops, tools and toys, carts and e-bikes. When they’re charged the wrong way, damaged, or mismatched with the charger, they can overheat. The goal isn’t fear; it’s good habits. This hub gives homes, schools, and workplaces quick, printable guidance so people can use batteries with confidence—and reduce risk every day.

Three keys messages:

Buy Smart

  • Choose listed products and power strips (look for recognized safety marks).
  • Use OEM or manufacturer-approved chargers—avoid look-alike adapters.
  • Retire damaged or swollen packs; don’t mix and match cells.

Charge Smart

  • Charge on a hard, flat, uncovered surface—not on beds, pillows, sofas, or carpet.
  • Keep cords tidy and low; no daisy-chains; one listed strip per outlet.
  • Prefer waking hours; unplug when full; keep exits clear.

Recycle Smart

  • Never put batteries in trash or single-stream recycling.
  • Tape terminals on loose cells, bag them, and take them to a drop-off/HHW site.
  • After water damage or impact, do not recharge—dispose properly.
